MessageBoard

MessageBoard - Help

A message board allows users to participate in discussions on a Web site. As opposed to chat rooms -- where discussions are brief and visible only to current participants -- message board posts remain visible for longer periods of time. Members can also browse and search through message posts.

Topic
A topic is the most general level of a discussion.

Thread
A thread is a specific discussion nested inside a a more general topic.

Message Post
A message post is a reply to a thread.

The message board structure can be illustrated like this:

Topic
Thread 1
  • Message Post
  • Message Post
  • Message Post
Thread 2
  • Message Post
  • Message Post
  • Message Post

How is a message board different from an email listserv?

The message board lets you carry on discussions in asynchronous mode (that is, participants do NOT have to be on-line at the same time). This is similar to a listserv, but instead of every message coming to your e-mail in-box, messages get posted to the site so everyone can read and reply to them.
